My Mercies Are New Everyday

This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:21-23).

About a year or so ago, the Lord spoke this to me: “My mercies are new everyday for a reason. The implications are vast.” Immediately my mind’s eye saw a number of beautifully wrapped gifts specific for me. I understood that each one contained what I would need for every moment and situation the day would bring; along with an emphasis on not shying away from receiving all they contained.

In the days that followed, I was reminded how the Lord fed the children of Israel in the wilderness (Exodus 16). Every morning when the dew had lifted, on the surface of the ground was this frosty round “gift” they were to gather up and make bread with. They were also instructed not to save anything for the next day, but to take only what each one needed for that particular day. Otherwise it would breed maggots and stink.

As I’ve continued reflecting on the above, several things have been taking root. First, I have an open invitation to receive every new-mercy-gift laid out for me for the day at hand, and all its needs. Second, God never promised tomorrow. It doesn’t exist. Therefore, if I try to save a single mercy for tomorrow it will not only steal from what I need today, but it will render His gifts useless… stinking. Third, any attempt on my part to recover a new mercy specific to yesterday is also an act of futility. Yesterday cannot be retrieved - including every moment that passes in the current one.

Finally…and this has just begun to sink in: As I choose to lay hold of and assimilate the Lord’s new mercies - though they are tailor-made for me - they aren’t just for me. Their objective and function are to reveal the Father and His purposes to others as well, as He shows no partiality to anyone (Acts 10:34).

Every human being is gifted with beautifully wrapped new-mercy-gifts, specific for them, with the same open invitation to receive all they contain for the day at hand, and its particular needs.

The reality is: Today is all we have. Tomorrow does not exist. And yesterday cannot be retrieved. Let’s choose to open up and receive all the new mercies He’s given us for every moment and situation in the day at hand, so that our Father and His purposes be revealed in us and to others.

[Today] let us come boldly before His throne of grace, that we may obtain (lay hold of) mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts (Hebrews 3:7,15 & 4:7).”

My mercies are new everyday. The implications are vast.”
